Safeguarding our oceans

Case studies from the first Commonwealth Futures Climate Research Cohort

The ocean underpins nearly all processes of life on Earth, but the dual threats of climate change and pollution are wreaking havoc on fragile ecosystems around the world. In this theme, the researchers share what inspires them about the oceans, and how they are working to protect marine environments and the communities that depend on them.

Discover how two Climate Research Cohort members joined forces to coordinate a trans-continental beach cleaning event in their home countries of Jamaica and South Africa.

In this collaborative blog, Dr Refilwe Mofokeng and Dr Andrea Clayton discuss the importance of beach cleans and how they motivated their fellow citizens to join the fight against marine litter.

Engaging the public creates an enabling environment for behavioural change. I believe that shifting the problem to future generations is not the solution, and we need to engage in sustainable solutions that will ensure a symbiotic relationship between humans and the environment.
